MY STORY

I moved from Ireland to Australia fifteen years ago. I came with a few songs in my head and a love of traditional music that’s only grown since. These days, I help run a number of weekly sessions in Brisbane and along the Coasts. The sessions have become a kind of home — a place to keep the tunes alive and share stories with others who love the music.

Over the years, I’ve played at festivals including Kiama, Cygnet, Illawarra, and Yungaburra. I’ve also performed in many small halls and theatres across different communities — it’s by far my favourite thing to do.I’ve always been drawn to songs and tunes that already carry stories. I like to give them space — to let them breathe and find a new home here.

About four years ago, I started studying art. I’ve been guided in that process by Lorraine Abernethy, whose support has meant a lot. I still remember my school art teacher writing, “Jack is a great trier; I’m not sure he’ll be an artist.” Maybe I’m still a trier, but these days I’m working on proving her wrong, one painting at a time.

For me, both music and art are about connection — to where I’ve come from, to where I am now, and to the people who cross paths with the work along the way.
